　現在のルクセンブルク領を南北に２大別する場合に用いられる歴史的地域名で、通例シュール川（Sauer）流域よりも南とされる。現ルクセンブルク領の南部２／３ほどとされ、北部が[[エスリング地方]]。

::　起伏が多いルクセンブルク領では、グートラント地方は、比較的低山地や丘陵地が多い。が、平坦とは言いがたく、渓谷などが多い。伝統的には、５つの地域に細別されると、イメージされる。特に、東西中ほどで概ね南北に続くアルゼット川流域の渓谷が特徴的な地形。
::　エスリング地方と比較すると、グートラント地方には、都市化したエリアが多く、首都[[ルクセンブルク市]]も、グートラント地方にある。ただし、樹林も多く、人口は都市部に集中する傾向が強い。無人地域も（エスリング地方ほどではないが）少なくない。
