　「ナイアガラ断崖（Niagara Escarpment）」は、[[北アメリカ]]の[[５大湖|５大湖，北アメリカの〜]]で、[[オンタリオ湖]]と[[エリー湖]]の間の地峡部を中心に、さらに広域に断続している断崖。

　現行の行政区分で言うと、[[U.S.A(合衆国)]]の[[ニューヨーク州|ニューヨーク州（U.S.A.）]]から、[[カナダ]]の[[オンタリオ州|オンタリオ州（カナダ）]]南縁の一部を経由。その後、U.S.A.の[[ミシガン州|ミシガン州（U.S.A.）]]、[[ウィスコンシン州|ウィスコンシン州（U.S.A.）]]、[[イリノイ州|イリノイ州（U.S.A）]]に渡っている。

　[[ナイアガラ滝]]は、この断崖の一部に、[[ナイアガラ川]]が流れることで形成されている。

　「ナイアガラ断崖（Niagara Escarpment）」は、地質調査に基づいて、[[断層帯|断層(地質学用語)]]ではなく、浸食作用によって形成された、[[ケスタ地形]]とされている。

　現在からおよそ４億3，500万年前〜４億1，000万年前頃の[[シリル期]]に形成がはじまった地形。この地形形成に並行して、硬度の高い[[石灰岩]]の層が形成され、次いで[[ドロマイト]]の層も形成された。この石灰岩層は、断崖形成の主要要因の１つで、各所の断崖面にも露呈している。

//It is traceable from its easternmost point in New York State, starting well east of the Genesee River Valley near Rochester, creating one small and two large waterfalls on the Genesee River in that city, thence running westward to the Niagara River forming a deep gorge north of Niagara Falls, which itself cascades over the escarpment. In Southern Ontario it stretches along the Niagara Peninsula hugging close to the Lake Ontario shore near the cities of St. Catharines and Hamilton and Milton where it takes a sharp turn north toward Georgian Bay. It then follows the Georgian Bay shore northwestwards to form the spine of the Bruce Peninsula, Manitoulin, St. Joseph Island and other islands located in northern Lake Huron where it turns westwards into the Upper Peninsula of northern Michigan, south of Sault Ste. Marie. It then extends southwards into Wisconsin following the Door Peninsula and then more inland from the western coast of Lake Michigan and Milwaukee ending northwest of Chicago near the Wisconsin-Illinois border.
